. What is UPSC?
UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) is a constitutional body in India that conducts exams to recruit candidates for top government posts in civil services and other central services. It was established on 26th January 1950 under Article 315 of the Indian Constitution.
2. Exams Conducted by UPSC:
UPSC conducts several important exams, including:
Civil Services Examination (CSE) -for IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, etc.
Indian Forest Service (IFOS)
Engineering Services Examination (ESE)
Combined Defence Services (CDS)
National Defence Academy (NDA)
CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces)

But the Civil Services Exam (CSE) is the most prestigious and competitive.
3. Purpose of the Civil Services Exam (CSE):
UPSC CSE recruits officers for All India Services and Group A Central Services, such as:
IAS - Indian Administrative Service
IPS - Indian Police Service
IFS - Indian Foreign Service
IRS - Indian Revenue Service
These officers hold powerful positions in administration, law enforcement, diplomacy, taxation, and more.
4. UPSC CSE Exam Structure:
The Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages:
1. Preliminary Exam (Prelims):
Objective-type (MCQs)
Two papers:
General Studies Paper 1 - 200 marks
CSAT (Paper 2) - 200 marks (Qualifying only)
Only qualifying in nature. Marks not counted in final merit.
2. Mains Exam:
Descriptive/Subjective type
Total 9 papers:
2 Qualifying (English & Regional Language)
7 Merit-based (Essay, GS1, GS2, GS3, GS4, and two Optional subject papers)
Each paper: 250 marks
Total for merit: 1750 marks
3. Interview (Personality Test):
Conducted by a UPSC board
275 marks
Tests personality, communication, leadership, presence of mind, etc.
Final Merit = Mains (1750) + Interview (275) = 2025 marks
5. Eligibility Criteria:
Educational Qualification: Graduate from any recognized university
Age Limit:
General: 21-32 years
OBC: 21-35 years
SC/ST: 21-37 years
Number of Attempts:
General: 6 attempts
OBC: 9 attempts
SC/ST: Unlimited (till age limit)
6. How to Prepare for UPSC CSE?
Start with NCERT Books (Class 6 to 12) for basics
Read newspapers daily (The Hindu or Indian Express)
Refer to standard books:
Polity - Laxmikanth
History - Spectrum
Geography - NCERT + GC Leong
Economy - Ramesh Singh or NCERT
